Hans Jørn Berthel

Designed by Hans Jørgen Berthel for the Danish manufacturer ABO Randers in the early 1960s, this magnetic spherical lamp—model Ny-Mag H.63—embodies the futuristic aesthetic of the Space Age. Crafted from black metal, its innovative magnetic base allows the light beam to be adjusted in any direction.

Originally created by Berthel, the design was later reproduced by several Danish and Italian manufacturers, including Frandsen Lighting and E.S. Horn, with subtle variations. Available in multiple colors, these lamps became a staple in many Danish households.

Following mergers in the Danish lighting industry during the 1980s and 1990s, ABO was first integrated into Lyskaer-Lyfa (alongside Fog & Mørup), then merged into E.S. Horn Belysning. The company later rebranded as Lightyears before being acquired in 2015 by the renowned Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen.
